N'Djamenaformerly Fort-LamyCity (pop., 1993: metro. area, 530,965), capital of Chad. It lies adjacent to Cameroon on the eastern bank of the Chari River, where it joins the Logone River. Founded in 1900 as Fort-Lamy, it remained a small settlement until after Chad's independence in 1960. In 1973 its name was changed to N'Djamena. It was occupied by Libyan forces in 1980–81 during the civil war that began in the 1960s. It is an important marketplace for cotton, cattle, and fish. It is the site of the nation's only university, the University of Chad (founded 1971). How to thank TFD for its existence? Ethiopian Airlines recently extended its network from Addis Ababa and now offers twice-daily services to Dubai, 11 weekly flights to Lagos, eight weekly flights to Accra, a daily service to Khartoum and Johannesburg, six-times-weekly flights to Dakar, five to N'djamena and four to Lome. Except in Gabon (3%), high seroprevalence (28%-97%) for WNV was detected in horses in West Africa and Central Africa, especially in N'Djamena (97%) and Dakar (92%) (Table 1). On 8 April 2004, the Sudanese Government, the SLA and JEM signed a humanitarian ceasefire accord in N'Djamena, the capital of Chad. |
