NHRP
(Next Hop Resolution Protocol) A protocol for layer 3 switching that routes a request through traditional routers to obtain the destination address and sends the data packets via layer 2 switches. An NHRP request is dropped if it is not recognized by an intermediate router.

Championed by the ATM Forum, MPOA uses NHRP to act as a network application used by nodes to negotiate an MPOA switched route.
This technique requires the identification and tracking of individual traffic flows between end stations - an unnecessary complication to networking that typically requires new protocols such as NHRP (Next Hop Resolution Protocol), new elements such as route servers somewhere in the network, and/or new proprietary driver software in every end station.
