Nadzhakov, Georgi Stefanov 

Born Dec. 26, 1896, in Dupnitsa (present-day Stanke-Dimitrov). Bulgarian physicist. Academician (1945) and vice-president (1945–58) of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Hero of Socialist Labor (1967). People’s Scientist of Bulgaria (1963). Member of the Bulgarian Communist Party since 1950.

In 1920, Nadzhakov graduated from the University of Sofia, where he began teaching in 1927, becoming a professor in 1932. He was also the university’s rector from 1947 to 1952. From 1925 to 1926 he worked in Paris under the direction of P. Langevin and M. Sktodowska Curie. In 1947 he was appointed director of the Institute of Physics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Nadzhakov’s principal works deal with the electrical properties of dielectrics and semiconductors; his works also deal with problems in nuclear physics. He discovered the phenomenon of the photoelectretic state.

Nadzhakov was a deputy of the National Assembly of Bulgaria from 1950 to 1969 and a member of the assembly’s Presidium from 1954 to 1958. He was also a member of the World Peace Council (1950). Nadzhakov first joined the Pug-wash movement in 1956. He is a foreign member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1958).
