Nafaa, Muhammad

Born Aug. 28, 1917, in southern Tunisia. Figure in the workers’ and communist movement of Tunisia.

The son of a peasant, Nafaa became a teacher and during World War II took part in the resistance movement. He joined the Tunisian Communist Party (TCP) in 1943. From 1943 to 1945 he headed the TCP organization in Sfax and in 1946 became a member of the party’s Central Committee and Politburo. In 1947 he was editor of the TCP official newspaper, al-Taliya (The Avant-garde). At the Third Congress of the TCP in 1948, Nafaa was elected first secretary of the TCP Central Committee. He has written a number of works on the liberation movement of the Tunisian people.
