Nagpur (näg`pr), city (1991 pop. 1,664,006), Maharashtra state, central India, on the Nag River. Formerly the capital of Central Provinces and Berar and then of Madyha Pradesh state, it is an industrial, commercial, and transportation center. It has expanded to include the neighboring town of Kamptee. Manufactures include textiles, transport equipment, and ferromanganese products. Founded in the 18th cent. as the capital of the Nagpur Maratha kingdom, it passed in 1853 to the British.

Nagpur

City (pop., 2001: 2,052,066), northeastern Maharashtra state, India. It is situated along the Nag River, almost at the geographic centre of India. Founded in the 18th century by a Gond prince, it became the capital of members of the Maratha confederacy. In the 19th century it was under British control. The city's products include textiles, iron goods, pharmaceuticals, transport equipment, cotton, and oranges. It is dominated by the centrally located former British fort. It is an educational and cultural centre.
