It was known as Nagybecskerek until its transfer (1918; confirmed 1920) from Hungary to Yugoslavia, and it was subsequently named Veliki Bečkerek (until the 1930s) and Petrovgrad (until 1947). Zrenjanin a city in Yugoslavia, in the northern part of the Socialist Republic of Serbia, in the autonomous region of Vojvodina. Population, 60,000 (1968). The city has a landing on the Becej River (which has been made into a canal) and is a railroad junction. Zrenjanin’s industries include flour-milling, brewing, and sugar refining, tobacco, textiles, and leather.
