Nagyszentmiklós Treasure

    0.01 sec.
Nagyszentmiklós Treasure

23 golden vessels, weighing a total of 9.945 kg, found in 1799 in the village of Nagyszentmiklós, near the city of Szeged in Hungary.

The vessels are decorated with representations of human figures, beasts, birds, winged monsters, and floral and geometric designs. One of the pitchers has circular medallions with depictions of a warrior on horseback wearing chain mail and leading a captured enemy, a hunter shooting an arrow, a deer being torn apart by a griffin, and a nude woman dancing with flowers in her hands. Several vessels have Greek and Turkish inscriptions.

The objects of the Nagyszentmiklós treasure date from the last third of the ninth century and apparently belonged to an ancient Bulgarian leader. The treasure is kept in the Art History Museum in Vienna.
