Nairi

a region north of Assyria in the basins of Lakes Urmia and Van. Nairi was mentioned in Assyrian inscriptions from the time of King Tukulti-Ninurta I (c. 13th century B.C.) until the time of Sargon II (722–705 B.C.). The kingdom of Urartu occupied approximately the same territory as that occupied by Nairi.
