A network server that looks up the data assigned to the name that is presented to it. It performs a translation or conversion service from the name into more details and/or technical data. For example, DNS name servers on the Internet look up the numeric IP address of an alphabetic domain name such as computerlanguage.com (see DNS). See naming service and directory service.
