Nampo (näm`pô), formerly Chinnampo (chĭn-näm`pô), city (1993 pop. 731,448), W North Korea, on Korea Bay (or West Korea Bay). It is the port city for Pyongyang and is also a leading metallurgical center. Other industries include shipbuilding, glassmaking, and electrode manufacturing. How to thank TFD for its existence? The Chinese military-political leadership has obvious intentions (at the end of Stage 2 of the long-term Navy modernization plan) to create a capability to expand active operations in the Sea of Japan and the Philippines within the second line of islands (Kuril, Japanese, and Nampo as well as New Guinea). He and his colleagues at Pyounghwa Motors had established a joint venture with Italian manufacturer Fiat to assemble new cars at a plant at the North Korean port of Nampo. In early July 1993, members of the Russian trade mission in North Korea and their families were beaten up by a crowd of North Koreans when they visited an open air market in Nampo. |
