Nanaimo (nənī`mō), city (1991 pop. 60.129), SW British Columbia, Canada, on Vancouver Island. It is a port, the base of a commercial fishing fleet, and the trade center for a farm and lumbering region. It is the site of a federal fisheries and oceanographic research station. A tourist center, Nanaimo hosts an annual Bathtub Race across the straits to Vancouver.

Pope & Talbot Portland, Oregon, USA said that its Harmac pulp mill in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada resumed full operation after shutting down a recovery boiler for repairs.
Raymond Penner of Malaspina University-College in Nanaimo, British Columbia, also shows that curvatures typical of commercial driver heads are near to the mathematically determined optimum.
This is just one more piece of evidence "making it abundantly clear the ocean is not unlimited," says Brian Riddell of the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans' Pacific Biological Station in Nanaimo, British Columbia.
