Nanded (nän`dād) or Nander (nän`dār), city (1991 pop. 309,316), Maharashtra state, S central India, on the Godavari River. Nanded is a district administrative center and is known for its fine muslin. A commercial center, it is also a market for cattle, grain, and cotton. A fort built by the Mughals Mughal or Mogul , Muslim empire in India, 1526–1857. The dynasty was founded by Babur, a Turkish chieftain who had his base in Afghanistan.
