Coextensive with Nantucket Island, south of Cape Cod, MA; original county, organized Jun 22, 1695. Name Origin: From an Indian word of uncertain meaning. An early map marks the island as Natocok, which may mean 'far away.' Others suggest the root Nantuck means 'the sandy, sterile soil tempted no one.'
