Napier, Sir Charles James (nā`pēr, nəpēr`), 1782–1853, British general; brother of Sir William Napier Napier, Sir William Francis Patrick, 1785–1860, British general and historian; brother of Sir Charles James Napier . He served in the Peninsular War and wrote a famous and still authoritative History of the War in the Peninsula (6 vol., 1828–40).

. He served with distinction in the Napoleonic Wars. Stationed (1822–30) on the Greek island of Cephalonia, he became acquainted with Lord Byron and was asked, although he declined, to command the Greek independence forces. As commander (1839–40) of the troops in N England, he exercised moderation in dealing with Chartist unrest. In 1841 Napier went to India, where he undertook the conquest (1843) of Sind. He served as governor of Sind until 1847.
