Narayan, Rasipuram Krishnaswamy

    0.01 sec.
Narayan, Rasipuram Krishnaswamy

Born Oct. 10, 1906, in Madras. Indian novelist. Writes in English.

Narayan graduated from the University of Mysore. In his novels Swami and Friends (1935), The Bachelor of Arts (1938), and The English Teacher (1945), Narayan tells of the fate of a young man in colonial India and perceptively portrays the distinctive features of Indian psychology. He has also written the novels Waiting for the Mahatma (1955), The Guide (1958; Russian translation, 1961), and The Man-eater of Malgudi (1961; Russian translation, 1964). Narayan’s prose of the 1950’s and 1960’s depicts the clash between the stagnating world of Indian provincial life and the new trends resulting from the development of bourgeois relations. He received the prize of the National Academy of Letters.
