Narayanganj

Narayanganj or Narayungunj (both: närä`yəngənj), city (1991 pop. 296,000), E central Bangladesh, at the confluence of the Lakhya and Dhaleshwari rivers. It is the river port for Dhaka and Bangladesh's busiest trade center, especially for jute. The city is also a collection center for hides and skins and a reception point for imports from and exports to Kolkata (Calcutta). Narayanganj and Dhaka together make up the principal industrial region of Bangladesh. There are jute presses, cotton textile mills, and ship repair facilities. Nearby is the celebrated shrine of the Muslim saint Kadam Rasul.

a city in Bangladesh, on the Lakhya River, 15 km south of Dacca; the two cities form an urban agglomeration. Population, 389,000 (1971). It is an important river port, railroad junction, and commercial center. Industries include the processing of jute, cotton, and foodstuffs.
