Narew

(nä`rĕf), Rus. Narev, river, c.275 mi (440 km) long, rising in the Białowieza Forest, W Belarus, near the border with Poland. It flows generally NW through NE Poland past Łomża, the head of navigation, then SW to the Vistula River near Warsaw. The Western Bug and the Biebrza rivers are the chief tributaries. Canals connect the Narew's tributaries with the Neman and Pripyat rivers. During World Wars I and II, major battles took place along the Narew's banks.

a river in Poland with its headwaters in the USSR, a right tributary of the Bug (Vistula basin). It is 438 km long and drains an area of more than 28,000 sq km. It originates in the Belovezh Virgin Forest in the Byelorussian SSR and flows through a wooded plain that is marshy in places.

The Narew is fed mainly by melted snow. High water occurs in spring, and low water in summer. The average rate of flow at its mouth is 130 cu m per sec, and the river level rises 4 to 6 meters during floods. In the river’s lower course water flow is regulated by a reservoir on the Bug (the dam and hydroelectric power plant above Dębe). The river freezes in late December and remains frozen until mid-March. It is icebound for an average of 80 days a year. The Narew is navigable in its lower and middle course. It is connected with the Nemen basin through its tributary, the Biebrza, the Augustów Canal, and the Augustów Lakes. Timber is floated down the Narew. In some Polish and German sources, the Narew is considered to be a tributary of the Vistula (and the Bug a left tributary of the Narew), making the Narew 476 km long.
