Nar’ian-Mar
(Nenets, “red city”), a city; center of the Nenets National Okrug, Arkhangel’sk Oblast, RSFSR. Seaport and river landing on the right bank of the Pechora River, 110 km from the Barents Sea. Population, 17,000 (1973). Nar’ian-Mar was founded in 1933 in connection with the construction of industrial enterprises. It became a city in 1935. The Pechora Fish Combine, a sawmill, a creamery, and a meat-packing plant are in Nar’ian-Mar. The city also has a zooveterinary technicum, a teachers college, and a museum of local lore.
