Narimanbekov, Togrul Farman Ogly 

Born Aug. 7, 1930, in Baku. Soviet painter and graphic artist. People’s Artist of the Azerbaijan SSR (1967).

Narimanbekov, who attended the Art Institute of the Lithuanian SSR in Vilnius from 1950 to 1955, has produced a number of genre compositions, including Dawn Over the Caspian (1957, Azerbaijan Museum of Art, Baku), In the Field Camp (1967, Tret’iakov Gallery), and Before the Holiday (1971). His works also include landscapes (Baku, 1964, Azerbaijan Museum of Art), portraits (Portrait of S. Bakhlulzade, 1959, Museum of Art of the Eastern Peoples, Moscow), and still lifes (Pomegranates and Pears, 1961, Museum of Art of the Eastern Peoples). Narimanbekov is noted for his energetic application of paint, tension of form, rich coloring, and sometimes primitivist portrayals of his subjects. In 1974 he was awarded the State Prize of the Azerbaijan SSR for his work as set designer for the staging of the choreographic work The Tale of Nasimi at the M. F. Akhundov Azerbaijan Theater of Opera and Ballet.
