In northeastern corner of FL, north of Jacksonville; organized Dec 29, 1824 (prior to statehood) from Duval County. Name Origin: For the Nassau River, which forms part of the northern border of the county, and Nassau Sound; named for the duchy in Germany associated with the House of Orange.

Area (sq mi): 725.86 (land 651.55; water 74.30). Pop per sq mi: 99.40.
Pop 2005: 64,746. State rank: 38. Pop change: 2000-20005 12.30%; 1990-2000 31.20%. Pop 2000: 57,663 (White 89.00%; Black or African American 7.70%; Hispanic or Latino 1.50%; Asian 0.50%; Other 1.70%). Foreign born: 2.70%. Median age: 38.30.
Income 2000: per capita $22,836; median household $46,022; Pop below poverty level: 9.10%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $30,143-$32,042.

    On the western end of Long Island, east of Manhattan Island; organized Apr 27, 1898 from Queens County. Name Origin: For the duchy in Germany associated with the House of Orange, hence with William, Prince of Orange (1650-1702), later William III, King of England.
