In west-central LA, northwest of Alexandria; organized 1807 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For the Indian tribe, from a Caddoan word translated variously as 'chinquapin eaters,' 'chestnut eaters,' 'pawpaw eaters,' or 'pawpaws.'

Area (sq mi): 1299.30 (land 1255.45; water 43.85). Pop per sq mi: 30.70.
Pop 2005: 38,541. State rank: 30. Pop change: 2000-20005 -1.40%; 1990-2000 6.50%. Pop 2000: 39,080 (White 57.20%; Black or African American 38.40%; Hispanic or Latino 1.40%; Asian 0.40%; Other 3.30%). Foreign born: 1.50%. Median age: 30.20.
Income 2000: per capita $13,743; median household $25,722; Pop below poverty level: 26.50%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $18,004-$21,698.
Unemployment 2004: 6.40%. Change from 2000: -0.30%. Median travel time to work: 24.80 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 17.50%.
