NIST (National Institute of Standards & Technology, Washington, DC, www.nist.gov) The standards-defining agency of the U.S. government, formerly the National Bureau of Standards. It is one of three agencies that fall under the Technology Administration (www.technology.gov), a branch of the U.S. Commerce Department that is devoted to advancing American economic growth through the use of technology.Besides NIST, there are the National Technical Information Service (www.ntis.gov) and the Office of Technology Policy (www.technology.gov/OTPolicy). NIST Abbr. for “National Institute of Standards and Technology, ” the successor to the US National Bureau of Standards.
