Born Jan. 14 (27), 1916, in St. Petersburg. Soviet physicist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1964).

Naumov graduated from the Moscow Institute of Communication Engineering in 1942. He worked at the Institute of Atomic Energy from 1945 to 1959 and at the Institute for Nuclear Physics of the Siberian Division of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR from 1959 to 1966. In 1966 he became deputy director of the Institute of High-Energy Physics.

Naumov’s principal works deal with the creation and study of radar systems (with others, 1941–45) and the physics and technology of accelerators. He has developed and built (with others) a number of installations, including a cyclotron for the Institute of Atomic Energy, an instrument with a spiral electron storage ring, and an air-core high-current synchrotron. With G. I. Budker, he directed the construction and adjustment of the first colliding-beam accelerators. He also directed the start-up adjustment of the Serpukhov 76-giga-electron-volt accelerator.

A recipient of the State Prize of the USSR (1953) and the Lenin Prize (1967), Naumov has been awarded the Order of Lenin, two other orders, and several medals.
