Naurzbaev, Khakimzhan Ismakhanovich
Born Aug. 27, 1925, in aul [village] No. 1, in present-day Leninskoe Raion, Kustanai Oblast, Kazakh SSR. Soviet sculptor. People’s Artist of the Kazakh SSR (1969). Became a member of the CPSU in 1951. Naurzbaev studied at the Kharkov Art Institute from 1945 to 1951. His works include lifelike portrait busts and statues, marked by thorough modeling. Examples of Naurzbaev’s sculptures are Amangel’dy Imanov (plaster of paris, 1950), Young Dzhambul (bronze, 1958), and Kurmangazy (marble, 1958)—all three works are in the T. G. Shevchenko Kazakh Art Gallery in Alma-Ata. The artist also produced monuments to Abai Kunanbaev (bronze and granite, 1960, Alma-Ata), Chokan Valikhanov (bronze and granite, 1969, Alma-Ata; Chokan Valikhanov State Prize of the Kazakh SSR, 1970), and Dzhambul Dzhabaev (cast iron and granite, 1963, in the city of Dzhambul).
