Navrátil, Josef
Born Feb. 17, 1798, in Slaný, near Kladno; died Apr. 21, 1865, in Prague. Czech painter. Navrátil studied in the Prague Academy of Arts from 1819 to 1823. He did a good deal of work on order for the Czech and German aristocracy, decorating their palaces with superficially impressive murals imbued with romanticism (murals in the palace in Ploskovice, completed in 1854). His small landscape paintings, still lifes, and paintings from everyday life are outstanding for their picturesque and free plasticity of form and rich coloration. Navrátil became the founder of the school of realism in 19th-century Czech art. REFERENCESToman, P. Josef Navrátil. Prague, 1919 and 1932.Josef Navrátil. Prague, 1958.
