Nazarov, Ivan Nikolaevich 

Born May 30 (June 12), 1906, in the village of Koshelevo, in what is now Kirzhach Raion, Vladimir Oblast; died July 30, 1957, in Moscow. Soviet organic chemist. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1953; corresponding member, 1946). Member of the CPSU from 1944.

Nazarov graduated from the K. A. Timiriazev Moscow Agricultural Academy in 1931, where he had studied under A. E. Favorskii. Nazarov then worked at the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR from 1934 to 1947. He was a professor at the Moscow Institute of Fine Chemical Technology from 1947 to 1957. Nazarov’s main works are devoted to the chemistry of acetylene and acetylene derivatives—vinyl acetylene, in particular. He synthesized a number of physiologically active compounds, including Promedol (trimeperidine), and successfully obtained carbinol cement. Nazarov used the method of diene synthesis to obtain androgen-like steroids.

Nazarov received the State Prize of the USSR in 1942 and 1946, and he was awarded three orders and several medals.
