Nazimov, Pavel Nikolaevich
Born June 27 (July 9), 1829; died Dec. 11 (24), 1902. Russian navigator; vice admiral. Son of a naval officer. In 1852–53, Nazimov sailed on the Dvina from Kronstadt around the Cape of Good Hope and Tasmania to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskii, from where he returned to St. Petersburg through Siberia. In 1870–71, commanding the corvette Vitiaz’, Nazimov sailed from Kronstadt around South America to the Pacific Ocean and Astrolabe Bay. He discovered the strait that was later named after his ship, the Vitiaz’. Nazimov was head of the Central Hydrographic Administration from 1892 to 1898. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
