Neagle, John

Neagle, John (nē`gəl), 1796–1865, American portrait painter, b. Boston. He was reared in Philadelphia, where he was apprentice to a coach painter. After travel in the West, he settled in Philadelphia and married the stepdaughter of Thomas Sully. He made a name for himself by his famous portrait Pat Lyon at the Forge (Pa. Acad. of the Fine Arts) in 1826. A skillful delineator of character, he was also a forceful draftsman and a fine colorist. There are works by him in the museums of Cleveland, Minneapolis, New Orleans, and New York City.
