Hathor (hăth`ôr), in Egyptian religion, celestial goddess of love and festivity. The personification of the sky, she was represented as a star-studded cow or as a woman with the head of a cow. She was identified with many other goddesses of fertility and love, such as Aphrodite. Her name also appears as Athor. Hathoror AthyrIn ancient Egyptian religion, the goddess of the sky, of women, and of fertility and love. Her principal animal form was a cow, and she was strongly associated with motherhood. Her worship was linked at Heliopolis with that of Re, whose wife or daughter she was said to be. In Upper Egypt she was worshiped with Horus, and in the necropolis at Thebes she was held to be the patroness of the dead.
