Negrín, Juan (hwän nāgrēn`), 1891–1956, Spanish statesman. A professor of physiology at the Univ. of Madrid, he was active in the Socialist party and was elected to the Cortes in 1931. After the Spanish civil war Spanish civil war, 1936–39, conflict in which the conservative and traditionalist forces in Spain rose against and finally overthrew the second Spanish republic.

 began (1936), Negrín was first finance minister and then premier (1937–39) of the republic. Dependent on the USSR for arms, he was unable to control Communist influence in the Republican army. He fled (1939) to France and then to England. He died in Paris.
