Neiburg, Mariia Fedorovna

(also Mariia Fridri khovna Neiburg). Born June 5 (17), 1894, in Krasnoiarsk; died Sept. 16, 1962, in Moscow. Soviet paleobotanist. Doctor of geological and mineralogical sciences (1941).

Neiburg graduated from the Advanced Courses for Women in Tomsk in 1917 and then taught there. From 1921 to the end of her life she worked as assistant director and senior research worker at the Peter the Great Geological Museum, which became the Geological Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1930. Neiburg was the first to provide paleobotanical substantiation for the stratigraphy of Carboniferous, Permian, and Triassic continental deposits in the Kuznetsk, Minusinsk, and Pechora coal basins. She described the Permian flora of Mongolia and the Jurassic flora of Tuva. She discovered Musci in the Permian deposits of Angaraland. Neiburg was awarded the Order of Lenin and the Order of the Badge of Honor.
