Neritic Animals
marine animals that live in coastal free waters (pelagic organisms), mainly over the continental shelf (in contrast to organisms that live in the open ocean). Neritic animals include various zooplankton and nekton organisms which often belong to the benthos at some stage of development; for example, the larvae of many benthic invertebrates reproduce on the bottom or feed on benthic organisms.
