In west-central KS, north of Dodge City; established Feb 26, 1867. Name Origin: For Noah V. Ness (?-1864), a corporal in the Kansas cavalry killed in the Civil War, and the only corporal to be so honored in KS.

Area (sq mi): 1075.00 (land 1074.75; water 0.26). Pop per sq mi: 2.80.
Pop 2005: 3,009. State rank: 89. Pop change: 2000-20005 -12.90%; 1990-2000 -14.40%. Pop 2000: 3,454 (White 97.50%; Black or African American 0.10%; Hispanic or Latino 1.50%; Asian 0.10%; Other 1.60%). Foreign born: 0.90%. Median age: 43.90.
Income 2000: per capita $17,787; median household $32,340; Pop below poverty level: 8.70%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $26,316-$31,492.
