Neuchâtel 

a city in Switzerland on the Lake of Neuchâtel and the southeastern slope of the Chaumont. Capital of Neuchâtel canton; population, 38,800 (1970). Transportation junction. Neuchâtel is a watchmaking center. It has electrical engineering, paper, and chocolate industries, primarily in its suburbs. The city has a university, which was founded in 1909. It is a popular tourist resort. The naturalist L. Agassiz worked in Neuchâtel in the 19th century.

Among the city’s noteworthy architectural monuments are a collegiate church with a Late Romanesque three-apsed choir (1209) and an Early Gothic portal (1276). Neuchâtel is also the site of a Late Gothic castle (renovated several times), Early Renaissance dwellings, and an early classicist town hall (1782). There is an art museum in the city.
