Neue Zürcher Zeitung

(German; “New Zürich Newspaper”)

Daily newspaper published in Zürich, Switz., generally considered one of the world's great newspapers. Founded as the weekly Zürcher Zeitung in 1780, it took its present name in 1821. In 1868 it became a joint-stock company, with shares held by Zürich citizens. Two daily editions were published by 1869, and three by 1894. From its founding it has appealed to readers interested in deep coverage of international news. Austere in demeanour, it is characterized by careful, nonsensational reporting, highly informed and extremely thorough analysis, and background information supplied as context for every major story.
