Neumünster (noI`mün'stər), city (1994 pop. 82,014), Schleswig-Holstein, N central Germany. It is a transportation and industrial center; manufactures include machinery, textiles, leather, and paper. Known in the 12th cent., Neumünster was chartered in 1870.
Neumünster a city in the Federal Republic of Germany, in the Land of Schleswig-Holstein; located on the Stör River. Population, 86,000 (1972). A railroad junction, Neumünster has electrotechnical industry and machine-building industry, which produces equipment for food-processing and chemical enterprises. Neumuenster Zoo, whose polar bear Lars fathered Knut, wants part of those earnings and is seeking to force Berlin Zoo to openly state how much it has made in royalties from images of the cub reproduced in posters, books, a film and countless stuffed toys. A legal battle between two zoos has begun in Berlin, with the Neumuenster zoo in northern Germany claiming it is due a slice of the Knut millions because the polar bear's father, Lars, resides there and, as such, it is the legal owner of Lars's first offspring. |
