Komeito 

(Japanese, “Clean Government Party”), a political party in Japan. Founded in 1964 by the Buddhist society Soka Gakkai.

Komeito is composed basically of the semiproletarian and petit bourgeois strata. Its program proclaims the necessity of Buddhist democracy for the “cleansing of Japan’s political life” and for improving the well-being of the people through parliamentary means. The party’s eighth congress (1970) declared the aim of the organization to be the creation of “humane socialism.” Komeito’s platform calls for an independent foreign policy, prohibition of nuclear weapons and nuclear testing, and improvement of relations with the USSR. With a number of reservations, the party advocates the severance of Japan’s military alliance with the USA. On a number of concrete issues it acts jointly with the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. It has more than 120,000 members (January 1973). In 1971 a delegation of the party visited the USSR.
