an island in the SE Caribbean, northeast of Trinidad: ceded to Britain in 1814; joined with Trinidad in 1888 as a British colony; part of the independent republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Pop.: 54 084 (2000)

Tobago 

an island in the Atlantic Ocean, northeast of Trinidad, with which it forms the country of Trinidad and Tobago. Area, 300 sq km. Population, 39,300 (1970). Tobago has mountains in the northeast (elevation, up to 576 m), which are composed mainly of volcanic rocks with granitic intrusions. A lowlying limestone plateau is in the southwest. The climate is tropical, hot and humid. Tobago has evergreen forests and cacao and coconut-palm plantations. The chief city of Tobago is Scarborough.
