New Windsor Cantonment State Historic Site Location: Along NY 300, 1 mile north of Vails Gate. Facilities: Picnic area (é), interpretive displays, visitor center, scenic view (é), hiking trail. Activities: Guided and self-guided tours, reenactments, living history demonstrations, educational programs, hiking. Special Features: Site is the location of the final encampment of George Washington's army. It was from here that cease-fire orders were issued on April 19, 1783, ending the eight-year War of Independence. The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor is located here also, and the site played a central role in the history of the Purple Heart.
