The county is coterminous with the borough of Manhattan, part of New York City. Name Origin: Named in 1664 when Col. Richard Nicolls seized the Dutch territories for King Charles II of England, who granted them to his brother, James (1633-1701), Duke of York and Albany, later James II, King of England. Lands east of the Hudson River were called Yorkshire, later New York. Called Nieuw Amsterdam by the Dutch. Area (sq mi): 33.77 (land 22.96; water 10.81). Pop per sq mi: 69390.20. Pop 2005: 1,593,200.
