New York schoolPainters who participated in the development of contemporary art, particularly Abstract Expressionism, in or around New York City in the 1940s and '50s. During and after World War II, leadership in avant-garde art shifted from war-torn Europe to New York, and the New York school maintained a dominant position in world art into the 1980s. He has taught at Pratt Institute and the New York Institute of Technology; has served on design juries for Pratt Institute, the New York School of Interior Design, and NY Construction magazine's Best of 2006 Awards, and recently chaired the AIA Maryland 2006 Design Awards Jury. With Gertrude Shurr, O'Donnell founded a New York school that helped to launch more than one generation of outstanding dancers, among them Robert Joffrey, Gerald Arpino, Norman Walker, Bill Louther, Jonathan Watts, and Ben Vereen. The panel's report - with recommendations scheduled to be submitted in June - came as Villaraigosa completed a two-day trip to New York City where he visited an inner-city school to learn about changes since Mayor Michael Bloomberg took over the New York school system. |
