Astronomy one of the four principal phases of the moon, occurring when it lies between the earth and the sun new moon [′nü ′mün] (astronomy) The moon at conjunction, when little or none of it is visible to an observer on the earth because the illuminated side is turned away. New Moon the lunar phase in which the moon is located between the sun and the earth. The moon at the time is invisible to an observer on the earth since the lunar hemisphere facing the earth is not illuminated (see). If during a new moon the moon is located precisely on the line joining the earth and the sun, then a solar eclipse occurs.
