1. the moon when it appears as a narrow waxing crescent
2. the time at which this occurs
3. Astronomy one of the four principal phases of the moon, occurring when it lies between the earth and the sun

new moon [′nü ′mün]
(astronomy)
The moon at conjunction, when little or none of it is visible to an observer on the earth because the illuminated side is turned away.

New Moon

the lunar phase in which the moon is located between the sun and the earth. The moon at the time is invisible to an observer on the earth since the lunar hemisphere facing the earth is not illuminated (see). If during a new moon the moon is located precisely on the line joining the earth and the sun, then a solar eclipse occurs. The new moon is considered to mark the beginning of the month in a number of lunar calendars.
