Newberry, John Strong (1822–92) geologist, paleontologist; born in Windsor, Conn. As a physician-naturalist, he accompanied several army exploring expeditions to the American West in the 1850s; in his Report Upon the Colorado River… (1861) he attributed the formation of the Grand Canyon to erosion; he later published important work on fossil fishes and fossil plants in North American coalbeds. While on the faculty of the Columbia School of Mines (1866–92), he helped establish the institution's outstanding scientific reputation.
