Newell, Frederick Haynes (1862–1932) civil engineer; born in Bradford, Pa. He was appointed hydrographer to the U.S. Geological Survey in 1888. He helped prepare bills including the Reclamation Act of 1902 and became director of the Reclamation Service (1907–1914). He later consulted on numerous natural resource projects and wrote on the subject.
