Newhart, (George Robert) Bob (1929– ) television comedian; born in Chicago. An accountant who created monologues as a diversion, he became famous with a best-selling recording of his first night club engagement, The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart (1960). A low-key satirist, he starred in a series of television sitcoms, The Bob Newhart Show (1971–78), Newhart (1982–90), and Bob (1992). |
