In central GA, southeast of Atlanta; organized Dec 24, 1821 from Henry, Walton, and Jasper counties. Name Origin: For Sgt. John Newton (1752-80), soldier under Gen. Francis Marion (1732?-95) in the Revolutionary War, who saved several colonial patriots from execution by surprising and capturing the British soldiers guarding them.
