Nez Perce National Historical Park Address: 39063 US Hwy 95 Spalding, ID 83540 Phone: 208-843-2261; Fax: 208-843-2817; Web: www.nps.gov/nepe/ Size: 2,495 acres. Established: Authorized on May 15, 1965. Location: Park includes 38 sites located in north-central Washington, northeast Oregon, north-central Idaho, and western Montana. Headquarters is located in Spalding, Idaho, 11 miles east of Lewiston. Facilities: Picnic area, rest rooms (é), visitor centers (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Activities: Hiking, auto touring, fishing, swimming, cross-country skiing, ranger-led programs. Special Features: The history and culture of the Nez Perce Indian country are preserved, commemorated, and interpreted here. Of the park's original 24 sites, and the 14 additional sites added in 1992, the National Park Service owns 9 of the properties, including Big Hole National Battlefield (see separate entry for description) and Bear Paw Battlefield. Other properties are managed through cooperative agreements. Park includes a number of sites that Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark passed through or camped at on their journey across western Montana and central Idaho. See other parks in Idaho.
