Ngami
a lake in the delta of the Okavango River, in Botswana. Lake Ngami is approximately 60 km long and 6–16 km wide. It is located in the Kalahari Desert, about 900 m above sea level. The saltwater lake was discovered in 1849 by D. Livingstone. In the 1920’s its tributaries became shallow; as a result the lake contains water only for a short time near the mouth of the Nghabe River. Despite that, he began exploring and is credited with discovering Lake Ngami in 1849, the Zambesi river in 1851 and the spectacular Victoria Falls in 1855. As a result of a confirmed case of polio in the Ngami District in the northern region, the Government ordered polio vaccinations targeting children under 5 years of age during the reporting period. |
