a department in central France, on the right bank of the middle Loire River. Area, 6,900,000 sq km. Population, 249,000 (1973). Nevers is the capital.

The economy of Nièvre is based on industry, which is represented by metallurgy, machine building, the production of ceramics, food processing, and woodworking. Nièvre also supports a logging industry and stock raising on pasturelands. Nièvre has several spas, including Saint-Honoré-les-Bains.
