In north-central KY, northeast of Lexington; established Dec 18, 1799 from Bourbon and Mason counties. Name Origin: For Col. George Nicholas (1754-99), officer in the Revolutionary War and first attorney general of KY. He is considered the "Father of the KY Constitution" for his part in drafting it.

In central WV, east of Charleston; organized Jan 30, 1818 from Greenbrier, Kanawha, and Randolph counties. Name Origin: For Wilson Cary Nicholas (1761-1820), U.S. senator from VA (1799-1804), U.S. representative (1807-09), and governor (1814-16).
